WWF-Turkey was established in 1996 by the Turkish Society for the Conservation of Nature (DHKD), which was itself founded in 1975. In 2001, DHKV became the national organization of the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the global conservation organization. WWF-Turkey has some 25 employees and nearly 12,000 supporters in Turkey.
Projects of WWF-Turkey have been supported by the European Union, World Bank, foundations, embassies, WWF International, etc. Within Forest, Freshwater and Marine/Coastal programs, WWF- Turkey focuses on (1) protected areas, (2) sustainable use of natural resources and (3) ecological restoration of landscapes and habitats. Themes of particular interest are:
- seizing conservation opportunities in the process of pre-alignment to EU policies and legislation
- drawing attention to consumer habits that cause pressure on natural resources in order to lead a change towards sustainable consumer practices
- minimizing the negative and unnecessary impact of large infrastructural development and promoting alternatives that are environmentally sustainable
- focussing on agricultural practices to minimize their negative impact on the environment.
WWF-Turkey aims to protect Turkey's biodiversity and enhance sustainable management of natural resources through field projects, which include mobilization of stakeholders through advocacy and outreach efforts as well as awareness-raising activities.
